Inheritors Part 1
Two brothers are in a dim room, listening to the sound of their Father crying out upstairs. There isn't much light in the room, only the flicering of low flames and embers, and the sound of the wind and rain outside. One of the Brothers is looking out to sea.
Simon
They must still be far out, I don't think they'll get in with it like this.
Ralph
What's the use in worrying about that? Can't you see what's happening to the old man?
Simon
Just trying to take my mind of things.
Ralph
You'd be with them if you could Simon, don't bother pretending. Out there at sea. You'd rather be there than here. It was always the case with you.
Simon
I do love the sea.
Ralph
Maidens. Sirens. The tide's embroidery. You never looked after him.
Simon
And you?
Ralph
You never suffered him.
Simon turns from the window, walks over and takes a log from a basket near the tall mantlepiece.
Ralph
You needn't bother, soon it'll be light out.
Simon throws the log into the fire.
Ralph
It will be morning and he'll be dead
Ralph
And that will be the end of it.
Simon
That will be the end yes.
